„Faith comes by hearing”

Author: Mirosław Rucki

St. Paul, a prominent Jewish theologian and expert in the law of Moses, was convinced that faith in Jesus is absolutely necessary for salvation. He wrote: “yet who know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus” (Gal 2:16). Where does such conviction come from that stimulates faith?

St. Paul himself explains it this way: “ So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ.” (Rom 10:17). Without listening there is no faith, without faith there is no salvation. Therefore we should listen every day to what Jesus has to say.

In the Third World children die from hunger every day. The same happens to our soul: when it is not nourished by the word of God, we die in the wilderness. Created in the image and likeness of God, we need His words more than bread and water. Thirsty and hungry after 40 days of fasting in the wilderness, the Lord Jesus still believed that “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matt 4:4). And through obedience to the words of God He overcame Satan who was trying to deceive Him. Reaching for the word of God only occasionally, we tend to adjust the will of God to our lives.

It may seem to us that God is an “errand boy”, whose main task is sorting out our affairs. However, when we read and listen to the word of God systematically, we discover the truth about the personality of the Triune God who created the world and reigns in majesty, but who also leans out over human misery and reaches out His hand to us to pull us out of this misery. The word of God, addressed to us, transforms us and awakens in us the desire to comply with His will. We begin to desire to be free from our sins and weaknesses, we want to experience the true happiness for which God created us, and so we want to do His will in our life to gain salvation.

For St. Paul it meant the need to listen to the word of God in order to gain the faith necessary for salvation: ‘For, everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.’ But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?” (Rom 10:13-14). The Word of God is alive; if we want to really hear and listen to it, we need to break through the crust of our whims: “it seems to me, I’m sure, I know best”. We have to lean over the gentle, quiet, peaceful Word which is addressed to us.

When you decide on a systematic reading and listening, Jesus comes out to meet you with the light of the Holy Spirit and directly moves your heart. As time passes, more and more deeply He touches your inner man. You will not even notice when your thoughts, desires and actions will be made divine by the touch of Jesus. With astonishment you will see how many things Jesus has healed: your imagination from pornographic images, your feelings from immoral desires, your heart from dirt, your thoughts from selfishness and pride. You can see that a healed conscience is at work in you. Salvation is reached along a narrow road - but it is not a difficult road when we follow Jesus, listening to Him and stepping in His footsteps.

Constant contact with the word of God is necessary for us to lead a true Christian life. Our readers who began to regularly listen to the New Testament share how an incredible adventure has begun in their lives ... God speaks to us - let us hear what He has to say to us!

I had a very difficult day yesterday, I was all shaky. My body literally refused to obey me, I was not capable of any work. I was shaking inside and out. I could not even pray, and there was no question about reading the Scripture - I was shaking even more then. I went to bed, and I told myself that Satan would not disconnect me from the word of God (because that was what he was up to). I downloaded the New Testament from the CD onto the phone. I turned on the daily reading (Hebr 11-13). I decided that I wanted to hear only the words of Scripture, not the noise from the street. I put on my headphones.

I felt almost physically how the word was spreading from my ears all over my body. For an hour I repeated these chapters, their content was also very important to me. This was an hour of rest. I relaxed a bit. The Lord put me back on my feet – my spiritual feet as well.

I am a truck driver and recently I received a new car with super speakers. I started listening to the New Testament and I was very impressed. The first impression was that God reproached me for all my sins. I had never felt so bad as a man before! My whole soul wanted to break free from sin and beg God for forgiveness. As I listened, I experienced relief because I felt with all my heart how much God loved me, a sinner, and how much He wanted my salvation. There is hope for the sinner! And this hope is Jesus Christ, who gives His whole self to us: He was killed on the cross, is risen and present in the Eucharist on the altars of the world, and ready to forgive whenever we desire improvement and we get round to confessing our sins. However, the most frightening was listening to the text of Revelation, it gave me the shivers! I truly believed that all my failures meant nothing, because Jesus Christ had definitively conquered and I could have a part in this victory through prayer and a sacramental life. I have found that listening to the Word of God truly has an immense power!

I am blind and I have never had the opportunity to read the Scriptures. The audio book with the text of the New Testament, which recently appeared on the market is something amazing for me. I can not even express what it means to me - after all, I have never had the opportunity to get to know this wonderful book in its entirety. Of course, I heard fragments in the Mass or on the online radio, but now I began to understand how many spiritual treasures the New Testament includes. I thank God for this gift and I really desire that this recording would be available in all communities of blind people.
