The infinite dignity and value of every human being

Author: Fr Mieczysław Piotrowski S.Chr.

Christmas speaks to us about how great a dignity God has ascribed to every single person. It is a truth of faith that Jesus Christ, by becoming a true man, as the Divine Person of the Word, has united Himself with each and every man. (cf. Gaudium et Spes, 22).

In this way He ensured that from the moment of conception every person has infinite dignity and value, as well as the inviolable right to life and freedom of conscience. The dignity of man is determined by his humanity, in which Christ is united. Therefore, the same dignity and the same right to life is granted to adults as to those who have just been created at the moment of conception, both the mentally disabled and the Nobel laureates, both beggars and millionaires.

The truth of the infinite dignity of every person provides the fundamental right to life and the freedom of conscience for all people without exception. No legal or formal body can decide in a democratic vote about the possibility of killing unborn children, on the admissibility of euthanasia or on the use of in vitro methods which are inevitably linked to the selection and killing of many unborn human beings.

Saint John Paul II states that “laws which legitimize the direct killing of innocent human beings through abortion or euthanasia are in complete opposition to the inviolable right to life proper to every individual; they thus deny the equality of everyone before the law.” (Evangelium vitae, 72); Abortion and euthanasia are thus crimes which no human law can claim to legitimize. There is no obligation in conscience to obey such laws; instead there is a grave and clear obligation to oppose them by conscientious objection. (…) In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to “take part in a propaganda campaign in favour of such a law, or vote for it” (ibid, 73) .

“Laws which legitimize the direct killing of innocent human beings through abortion or euthanasia are in complete opposition to the inviolable right to life proper to every individual” (St John Paul II)
