The use of contraception is an act of radical disobedience towards God, hence, a mortal sin which damages love, marriage, and the family.
God wants marital relations to be a sign of the sacrament of Holy Matrimony by which spouses share in the life and love of God in the One Holy Trinity. It is essential for the couple to have received the sacrament of Holy Matrimony and for them to be in a state of sanctifying grace.
Contraception Damages Marital Happiness
According to God’s plan, the purpose of sexual relations in marriage is procreation and the strengthening of the bonds of mutual love between spouses. The conscious rejection of either of these purposes causes the sexual relations to become an act which is intrinsically evil. Any deliberate and conscious act to render marital relations infertile is a violation of the moral norm that the Creator established, and is hence a mortal sin.
Contraception contradicts the very substance of marital relations. This is why it is an immoral act. Marital relations should always conclude with the deposit of the husband’s sperm in the wife’s birth canal, which is why interruption of sexual relations is also an act of contraception.

Saint Paul VI wrote: “man cannot attain that true happiness for which he yearns with all the strength of his spirit, unless he keeps the laws which the Most High God has engraved in his very nature. These laws must be wisely and lovingly observed.” (Humanae vitae 31)
Any action which has as its objective the obstruction of fertilization in the marital act is an act of disobedience to God and submission to the domination of the power of evil.
The powers of evil wish to distort the truth about love, sexual relations, and children in the awareness of the spouses. The Lord God reveals to us that an essential quality of love is a readiness to sacrifice, and a capacity for selfless offering of one’s self for the good of the beloved person. At the same time, Satan suggests that love is the implementation of the desire to use the other person in order to calm one’s own lust. Hence, this is how the powers of evil identify fornication (debauchery) with love.

The person is free and can tell God “no” by using contraception, but the consequences of violating the moral law are tragic and very painful.
Satan wants spouses to separate sexual relations from God’s plan for the creation of new human beings and limit them to just the satisfying of sensual lust. The contraceptive mentality is a destructive ideology because it leads to complete separation from God, who is the only source of love and life. Its purpose is to promote promiscuity, pornography, various sexual perversions, the acceptance of the killing of unborn children, and the criminal practice of extracorporeal fertilization (in vitro).
Sexual relations between spouses should above all be for them the spiritual experience of unity in Christ. In this intimate union with each other and with Christ, the spouses should be open to acceptance of the gift which is the miracle of the creation of another human being. The child conceived is not an encumbrance, an unwanted side-effect of sexual relations, but God’s greatest gift to us and the fruit of His love in the love of the spouses. A child should never be treated as an object, as the property of the spouses or a toy for fulfilling their needs.
However, when spouses find themselves in a situation in which they really feel they shouldn’t conceive another child, they can avoid conception by use of natural methods of birth control (especially the Billings Method, also known as the Mucus Method), but not through use of contraceptives.
People who neuter themselves through the use of contraceptives, break their connection to God, submit to the control of the powers of evil, and lose their freedom and capacity for love. At the same time, spouses who live in accordance with their fertility, and treat it as a gift from God, maintain their freedom. They recognize and take into account the rhythm of fertility, and use natural methods of family planning, that is, they discern God’s will, and joyfully accept as many children as the Lord God planned for their marriage. They live in accordance with the moral law, and the requirements of the ecology of the human body, without interfering with the natural rhythm of fertility in any way.
