I Chose Drink Over Her

Feb 13, 2019 Testimony

My thirst for alcohol, unfortunately, turned out to be stronger. I broke up with my girlfriend; worse, I chose drink over her

On 7th June this year, I celebrated my second anniversary of joining the Movement of Pure Hearts. I am also turning 32. As a warning for young people I would like to describe the years of my youth because I want others to avoid destroying their lives, just as I had through my own foolishness.

When I finished primary school I started going to clubs. I also started drinking to find the nerve to talk to the girls there. I did not realize then that I was slowly falling into alcohol addiction. After a few years of this, I had gone down to drinking beers early in the morning at the back doors of certain shops that would sell alcohol to minors. Despite this, I managed to have a beautiful, level-headed girlfriend and I tried to limit my drinking. But it turned out that my thirst for alcohol was stronger. I broke up with her; worse, I chose drink over her. My drinking got so out of control that I landed in the hospital. The doctor asked if I knew how I had ended up there and I answered honestly that I had no idea. The doctor then told me that I had “an epilepsy attack instigated by alcohol.” I was told that if I continued behaving this way, I would not live to see forty.

I joined the Movement of Pure Hearts. It was a difficult decision for me – those who knew me laughed and sneered: “You?! You and the Movement of Pure Hearts?!” But when I started reading the Holy Bible and reflect on the words, I realized that the merciful God does not reject anyone

Alcohol brought with it other dangers, such as masturbation and acquiring the services of prostitutes. To be honest, I did not admit to these sins in confession because of my shame and resistance, which the devil had incited in me. It was only when I received a copy of Love One Another! from a priest in our parish, that I realized the sinfulness of my ways. I then started praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and later I joined the Movement of Pure Hearts. It was a difficult decision for me – those who knew me laughed and sneered: “You?! You and the Movement of Pure Hearts?!” But when I started reading the Holy Bible and reflect on the words, I realized that the merciful God does not reject anyone, and does not exclude them from participating in his glory. Quite the contrary, He seeks out the lost sheep and will gladly take back anyone who, with a willing and humble heart, confesses his sins and appeals to the Divine Mercy.
