I Cried for Help

Feb 13, 2019 Testimony

No one explained to me what the rules were in a healthy relationship between a man and a woman. A man who truly loves a woman should respect her and not force her to have a sexual relationship

I come from a family of believers but who do not practice their faith. When I was a teenager, my faith was not important to me. I went to Church but only because it was what you were supposed to do. Sometimes I would leave in the middle of the Mass because I preferred to be with my friends. I did not feel guilty about this; it did not matter to me that I did not have a personal relationship with Jesus. I knew that there was a God but I did not look for Him, nor did I need His love.

When I was 16, I had my first boyfriend. It was something new for me, since no boy had been interested in me earlier. People in school thought of me as a plain Jane who was always by herself, with no friends. I was especially excited that I would be in a relationship for the first time. It turned out, however, that it was a relationship based solely on physical intimacy. It did not last long. Soon after I was involved with a string of other boys.

After a while I began to notice that the role of the woman in a relationship was based on fulfilling the whim of the man. No one explained to me what the rules were in a healthy relationship between a man and a woman. A man who truly loves a woman should respect her and not force her to have a sexual relationship. By forcing her, this shows that he does not respect her and that her opinion is not important to him. For him, what is important is that he gets his way.
